Shell on Tuesday said it had temporarily halted construction of a major biofuels production facility in the Netherlands, in a bid to ensure it is able to produce competitively in the face of an anticipated flood of sustainable fuels into the market from the U.S.

Shell PLC (LSE:SHEL, NYSE:SHEL) said it has paused on-site construction work at a new 820,000 tonnes a year biofuels facility in Rotterdam to determine the commercial way forward for the project. Contractor numbers will reduce on site and activity will slow down, helping to control costs and optimise project sequencing, said the statement.

Shell said on Tuesday it will pause construction work at its biofuels facility in the Netherlands due to weak market conditions, the latest step under CEO Wael Sawan's drive to boost the energy company's returns.
